Georgetown opens Big East play with an upset of UConn
HARTFORD, Conn. -- There are going to be quite a few games this season between ranked Big East teams.
The first of them was a shocker in that the young visiting team came away with a convincing victory over a veteran team playing at home.DaJuan Summers scored 18 points and Georgetown (No. 8 ESPN/USA Today, No. 11 AP) beat No. 2 Connecticut 74-63 on Monday night for its seventh straight win."The commissioner isn't handing out trophies tonight and it doesn't get easier," Hoyas coach John Thompson III said, referring to Saturday's home game against No. 3 Pittsburgh. That game can't look as daunting after beating the Huskies at the XL Center.
"We can't get too high because we have Pitt on Saturday," Summers said. "We're where we're supposed to be and we have a lot of work to do, so we can't get comfortable."Chris Wright and freshman Greg Monroe both had 16 points for Georgetown (10-1, 1-0), and Austin Freeman added 13.A.J. Price had 16 points and Jeff Adrien added 15 for the Huskies (11-1, 0-1), who cut a 12-point deficit early in the second half to three twice but couldn't get any closer. The Hoyas opened the game on an 18-3 run by hitting four of their first five 3-point attempts, then held off Connecticut by making 18 straight free throws in the second half to finish 18-for-21 from the line."I hated our body language early, saw some brief spurts, then detested it the last eight minutes," Connecticut coach Jim Calhoun said. "I'm in a state of shock, I really am. To have a home game in the conference opener against a rival like Georgetown and not be excited -- there was no reason not to be excited. I don't know what team I was coaching tonight."It was the Hoyas' eighth straight victory in a Big East opener, the last five under Thompson.Georgetown's only loss this season was to Tennessee in the semifinals of the Old Spice Classic. The loss snapped Connecticut's seven-game winning streak over ranked opponents, including victories this season over Miami, Wisconsin and Gonzaga. This was the first time both teams were ranked when they met since the 1996 Big East tournament championship game when Connecticut, led by Ray Allen, beat Georgetown, led by Allen Iverson. The Big East has seven schools ranked in The Associated Press Top 25.Monroe hit his second 3 of the game 13 seconds into the second half to put Georgetown up 39-27. The Huskies went on a 14-1 run to get within three points for the first time. The 6-foot-11 Monroe, playing with three personal fouls, stopped the run with a hook shot over 7-3 Hasheem Thabeet to make it 42-37 with 14:05 left. Stanley Robinson made two free throws to make it a three-point game again and then Freeman took over, scoring seven of the first nine points in a 14-6 run that got Georgetown's lead back in double digits, 56-45, with 9:46 to go.Connecticut was never closer than nine points the rest of the way and the Hoyas led by as many as 17."We knew they would make a run and we had to withstand it," Summers said.Thompson said he told the team during a second-half timeout that a run was coming."To hold on in this environment when it got close was big," Thompson said. "We made plays at both ends to do it."Georgetown opened an 18-3 lead in the game's first 6 minutes, hitting seven of its first 10 shots from the field while the Huskies started 0-for-4 and turned it over five times in that span. The numbers had to start evening out and they did as Connecticut picked up the defensive intensity. The Huskies got within four twice but Wright hit two tough shots in the final 1:03 for a personal 4-1 run that gave the Hoyas a 36-27 lead."It was exciting and it was pretty hostile," Wright said. "It was a Big East game."Thabeet finished with four points on 2-of-4 shooting and had seven blocked shots."Today they got us," Thabeet said. "We just have to look forward to the next game."
Sources: Cowher wants total control
Former Pittsburgh Steelers coach Bill Cowher, who rejected a chance to become head coach of the Browns last weekend, is not going to interview for the head coaching position of the New York Jets, according to multiple sources.
Cowher, according to a source, has been contacted by the Jets. Although he is interested in the Jets job, he told the team he would not be a candidate because he would like to bring in his own personnel director. Jets owner Woody Johnson plans to keep Mike Tannenbaum as his general manager after firing Eric Mangini as head coach Monday. With Tannenbaum as the general manager, Cowher is willing to pass on the Jets opportunity, stay in broadcasting for another year and wait to return to coaching in 2010. Cowher has told friends the Jets job interested him for several reasons. First, Cowher would love to coach in the New York market. Second, two of his daughters are either going to school or working in the New York-New Jersey area. Cowher does plan to coach in 2010. In 2009, though, he was only willing to return if every situation was right for him. He wanted to have a two-year break from coaching to be with family and recharge.Last weekend, Cowher met with Browns owner Randy Lerner, who asked him what it would take financially for him to be the Browns head coach. Having a close relationship with the Rooney family in Pittsburgh and still wanting more time with the family, Cowher didn't give Lerner a price, and said no.
Cowher recently extended his contract with CBS for another season.QB Ryan landslide winner as top offensive rookie
NEW YORK -- Matt Ryan is more than the face of the sensational turnaround by the Atlanta Falcons. He also is the best member of a superb rookie crop, earning The Associated Press 2008 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year award Tuesday.
The quarterback from Boston College, selected third overall in April's draft, was a landslide winner in balloting by a nationwide panel of 50 sports writers and broadcasters who cover the league. Ryan became the third quarterback in five years to win the award; before that, no QB ever took the honor.
He joins Ben Roethlisberger (2004) and Vince Young (2006) as top rookie quarterbacksNEW MUSIC 12 30 08

Romo collapses in shower after Eagles clinch
Many fans may not want the quarterback or coach back for another season. But they'll be here for at least one more game -- a playoff game. The Philadelphia Eagles overcame daunting odds to capture an NFC wild-card spot with a dominating 44-6 victory over the Cowboys on Sunday. So much for all that preseason Super Bowl hype in Dallas -- America's Team can start its vacation plans early. The Eagles (9-6-1) will play at NFC North champion Minnesota (10-6) next weekend."A lot of people counted us out and said it was over," McNabb said. "We continued to stay focused on what the plan was. We knew we had to come out and play a tough team that was hungry, just like we were. Today was a total team effort. Things worked out well and we're playing next week.
Surely, it'll be a drama-filled offseason for the Cowboys, as owner Jerry Jones has to answer more questions about coach Wade Phillips' job and perhaps consider a major overhaul."There will not be a new head coach," Jones repeated several times in a somber Cowboys locker room.In a game that became do-or-die for both teams shortly before kickoff, the Eagles thoroughly outplayed the error-prone Cowboys (9-7) in every facet. McNabb threw two touchdown passes and ran for another, and Brian Dawkins forced two fumbles that were returned for scores.Written off after a 10-3 loss at Washington last week, Philadelphia avoided elimination when Oakland upset Tampa Bay and Houston beat Chicago in the early games. The Raiders were 13-point underdogs against the Buccaneers, who lost their fourth straight."I want to thank the Raiders and Texans," Reid said. "They did a heck of a job."Of all the teams that remained in contention for a playoff berth entering the final weekend, the Eagles had the lowest odds. Meanwhile, Dallas knew all week it just had to win to get in.
How 'bout them Cowboys!Tony Romo came up way short in another crucial game, dropping his record to 5-8 in December. T.O. was a non-factor, despite six catches for 103 yards."They just handed us an old-fashioned butt whipping," Owens said. "I don't have all the answers, but I'd love to be part of the solution."Team sources told ESPN's Ed Werder that there was commotion and concern in the Cowboys locker room after the game when Romo collapsed in the shower. Players called for medical staff, who brought in a stretcher, but Romo walked out on his own. Romo then did his news conference but had to be helped from the podium. Sources said Romo suffered a rib injury in the second half, but he refused to answer questions about his health. Right from the start, the Eagles played with more urgency. While fans cheered Tampa's loss to Oakland, players waited until that game was over before running onto the field for pregame introductions. McNabb scored on a sneak from inside the 1 to put Philadelphia ahead 10-3 in the second quarter. He kept the drive going with a 59-yard catch-and-run to Correll Buckhalter on third-and-6. Buckhalter, who has missed three full seasons to knee injuries during his eight-year career, outran several tacklers to reach the Cowboys 6.Then the Eagles scored 17 points in the final 2:03 of the second quarter. McNabb tossed a 4-yard TD pass to Buckhalter to make it 17-3 just before the 2-minute warning. He twice kept the drive going in third-and-long situations, connecting with Kevin Curtis for 15 yards and DeSean Jackson for 34 yards to the Cowboys 3.Sheldon Brown intercepted Romo's underthrown pass to Roy Williams on Dallas' ensuing possession and returned it 23 yards to the Dallas 42. Then two big penalties -- a personal foul on Adam "Pacman" Jones and pass interference against Terence Newman in the end zone -- set up McNabb's 1-yard TD pass to Brent Celek. A fired-up McNabb sprinted toward the Eagles sideline and suddenly stopped. He turned around toward the Cowboys bench and flexed, the way T.O. often does."It's an exciting time for us right now, but we can't sit and dwell on this for a long time," McNabb said. "We know we have a tough team ahead of us, a tough task."Jones was stripped by Quintin Demps on the kickoff and Omar Gaither recovered at the Cowboys 31 with 3 seconds left in the half. David Akers made a 50-yard field goal to give the Eagles a 27-3 lead going into halftime.Dallas pulled out all the tricks on the first possession of the third quarter, including a 42-yard pass from tight end Jason Witten to Owens to the Eagles 14. But Dawkins sacked Romo on the next play, and Chris Clemons picked up the fumble and raced 73 yards for a score that gave Philly a 34-3 lead.Joselio Hanson returned Marion Barber's fumble 96 yards for a TD on the next series."I wake up tomorrow and I keep living," Romo said when asked how he deals with tough defeats. The Eagles seemed headed for their third last-place finish in four years after they tied lowly Cincinnati and were routed by Baltimore in consecutive weeks last month. McNabb was benched for the first time in his career in that loss to the Ravens and his future in Philadelphia was the hot topic. But McNabb came back strong and led the Eagles to three straight wins only to fall short against the Redskins -- Reggie Brown was tackled at the 1 on the final play.Still, the Eagles found a way to make the playoffs after getting all the help they needed around the league."Everybody turned their backs on us," Dawkins said. "But we believed in one another."Game notes
The Eagles scored a franchise-record 416 points this season. ... McNabb broke his own single-season team record for yards passing, finishing with 3,916. ... Akers kicked his 31st field goal in the first half, setting a single-season team record. ... Jackson set a team record with 912 yards receiving. He became the first rookie to lead the Eagles in catches since 1942. ... The Cowboys have lost nine consecutive season finales.
Nuggets dump Knicks as Anthony scores 32 in return
NEW YORK -- A week of rest was all Carmelo Anthony needed to rediscover his scoring touch.
Playing the defenseless New York Knicks probably helped, too.Anthony scored 32 points after missing three games with a bruised right elbow, and the Denver Nuggets sent the Knicks to their sixth straight loss with a 117-110 victory Sunday.
It was only the third 30-point game this season for Anthony, who has been bothered by the elbow since he was originally hurt in a victory over Houston on Nov. 30. The Nuggets decided to give their leading scorer a break after he averaged just 11.5 points on 8-of-27 shooting in losses to Cleveland and Phoenix on consecutive nights."I think that was the best thing that ever happened to me," Anthony said. "At first I was a little hesitant about doing it. Any time you can get rest during a long season like this, it helps."The Nuggets blew the double-digit lead they seized by making 15 of 20 shots in the second quarter, but recovered behind Anthony's flawless fourth.Anthony hit all five shots in the final quarter. His jumper with 4:32 left gave Denver the lead for good at 107-106, and he knocked down consecutive jumpers to give the Nuggets a six-point lead about two minutes later."They were letting him play 1-on-1. His jumper was going. We kind of just threw it at a hot guy," Denver coach George Karl said. "It seemed like he had more rhythm with his jumper. I know he likes to play in this building. I don't know if he's ever had a bad game in this building."For good measure, Anthony found Nene for a powerful clinching dunk that made it 116-109 with 1:05 to go. Anthony shot 13-of-19 and added nine rebounds."He was really hot. It's good to have him back," Denver guard Chauncey Billups said. "They never doubled him and if they would have, he's grown to the player that was going to make the next play, make the pass."J.R. Smith added 16 points and Billups 14 for the Nuggets, who shot 57 percent from the field in the opener of a four-game road trip.Nate Robinson scored 20 points on just 5-of-17 shooting and David Lee had 19 for the Knicks, who have yielded an average of 115.5 points during their skid. They came in allowing teams to shoot 48.3 percent, highest in the NBA, and even Mike D'Antoni's high-scoring offense can't overcome that."We've got to play defense. There's no doubt about it. I know I joke around a lot about it, but the only way we're going to win is to get better at it," D'Antoni said. "I've always felt like we're going to score no matter what. I don't care who's on the floor, we're going to score. So now we've just got to find a way how to stop people."Chris Duhon had 17 points and 11 assists for the Knicks, while Wilson Chandler also scored 17 points but shot only 6-of-19."I think we ended up taking bad shots at the end of the game," Duhon said. "Tough shots with our shot clock winding down. You can't beat a good team that way."Seeking to change things up, D'Antoni tinkered with his starting lineup. He benched Al Harrington, who was averaging 22.9 points in 15 games since the Knicks acquired him from Golden State in November, and gave Jared Jeffries, a better defender with poor offensive instincts, his first start of the season. The move did little to solve New York's defensive woes. The game was tied at 43 midway through the second quarter before Denver began getting to the basket at will.Lee slapped the backboard stanchion in frustration after one blown defensive sequence led to Nene's dunk, but that failed to provide a spark -- Denver scored on Anthony's slam on its next time down the floor to cap a 16-4 spurt and open a 59-47 lead with 2:03 left in the half. The Nuggets led 66-56 at the break, with 42 points in the paint.New York shot 60 percent in the third quarter, charging back to grab an 89-88 lead on Robinson's 3-pointer with 1:05 remaining, about the time a disgusted Kenyon Martin began cursing from the Nuggets' bench about letting the Knicks hang around.Smith threw in a long 3-pointer as time expired to give Denver a 93-89 lead entering the final quarter.Game notes
Denver's Renaldo Balkman received respectful applause when he entered in the first quarter. He was a surprising first-round pick by the Knicks in 2006 who became somewhat of a fan favorite for his energetic play before being dealt to the Nuggets last summer. He finished with nine points. ... Quentin Richardson came off the bench for the Knicks after missing Friday's loss to Minnesota with a sprained right ankle.
Lions first NFL team to finish 0-16
GREEN BAY, Wis. -- Nobody will remember the Detroit Lions came close to winning their last game. All anyone will know -- now and forever -- is 0-16.
The worst record in NFL history, a dubious distinction that will permanently stain everyone involved.
The Lions lost to the Green Bay Packers 31-21 on Sunday, making them the first team to go winless through a 16-game season. The 1976 expansion Tampa Bay Buccaneers (0-14) were the last NFL team to complete a season without a victory.
"I've got to live with this," center Dominic Raiola said. "I've been here eight years. This is on my resume."
It's also on the resume of Lions coach Rod Marinelli, who faces an uncertain future."No competitor wants to go through something like this," Marinelli said. "This is not fun to go through, obviously. But there's people going through a lot worse than this."Asked if he was glad it was over, the coach said "no. I could go another 16."Marinelli told reporters that he expected to have a routine Monday -- watch film of Sunday's game, meet with the team and then with owner William Clay Ford Sr. later in the day.
Marinelli has gone 10-38 in three seasons. His future has not been announced, but Ford has decided the leaders of the front office, Martin Mayhew and Tom Lewand, will be back in some capacity. The Lions' last loss didn't come without a fight. After falling behind 24-14 midway through the fourth quarter, Kevin Smith's 9-yard touchdown run put Detroit back within a field goal. But Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers responded with a 71-yard touchdown pass to Donald Driver and the Lions' Dan Orlovsky threw an interception on fourth-and-27 with 3 minutes left, dooming Detroit to futility of historic proportion."It's just kind of numb," veteran kicker Jason Hanson said. "It's here. It's been coming, though, a train rolling down the tracks for a while. We tried to stop it. We couldn't."The Lions were building toward this for years and now have lost 23 of their last 24 games. The 0-16 record will be a lasting testimony to the Matt Millen era. With Millen as president of the team from 2001 until he was fired on Sept. 24, Detroit won only 31 games -- none this year, of course. It's so bad that some Lions can't remember the last time they won."I don't ever want to be a part of this again," Orlovsky said. "We haven't won since, November of '07, maybe? I don't even know the last time we won a game."The Lions haven't won since Dec. 23, 2007, actually, when they beat Kansas City. Green Bay is where this woeful streak began at the end of last season. Since then, the Lions have lost 17 straight and have been outscored 551-281.Orlovsky was 22-of-42 for 225 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions for the Lions, whose bid to steer clear of the record book came undone in large part because of ill-advised penalties. Rodgers was 21-of-31 for 308 yards and three touchdowns for the Packers (6-10), and Ryan Grant and DeShawn Wynn rushed for 106 yards each. After a disappointing season of their own, Rodgers said the Packers wanted a win to build momentum for next season. Left unsaid was that they didn't want to be the only team to lose to the Lions this year."We didn't want to lose, no, we didn't," Rodgers said. "But really it's not on your mind once the game starts. I didn't even think about it until the fans started chanting in the fourth quarter. They played hard, they really did."Packers coach Mike McCarthy didn't want any part of the 0-16 discussion."I want to politely try to avoid the question here," McCarthy said. "That's tough. That's a tough deal. But we were focused on winning the game."With the Lions trailing 14-7 early in the third quarter, safety Kalvin Pearson then put a hard hit on Grant to cause a fumble, and recovered the ball at the Packers 11.Calvin Johnson caught a pass from Orlovsky and broke three tackling attempts to score a tying 14-yard touchdown with 10:20 left in the third quarter. But the Packers drove for a 36-yard field goal by Mason Crosby early in the fourth quarter. After a three-and-out by Detroit's offense, Lions linebacker Ernie Sims' penalty for a late hit out of bounds on Grant played a key role on a drive that ended with a 5-yard pass from Rodgers to fullback John Kuhn. The Lions weren't finished, as Orlovsky used two long completions to John Standeford to set up Smith's touchdown with 8:34 left. After the ensuing kickoff, Rodgers reared back and threw deep to Driver, who blew past Lions cornerback Leigh Bodden and ran in for a touchdown.Orlovsky led the Lions back into Packers territory, but a taunting penalty on Smith moved the Lions back near midfield and Orlovsky threw an interception to Nick Collins."It was a very bad, selfish decision," Smith said. "I let my emotions get the best of me. It was tough, but it is no excuse."Perhaps more than anything, the penalties got Raiola riled up."Stupid," Raiola said. "You know, just uncalled for. You're in a game like that, you can't do that. Just dumb."And very much like the Lions.Game notes
Green Bay's Driver and Greg Jennings each had 100 yards receiving Sunday. Combined with Grant and Wynn's 100-yard rushing days, it is the first time in league history a team has had a pair of 100-yard rushers and 100-yard receivers in a single game, according to Elias. ... Roethlisberger taken off on stretcher, suffers concussion
PITTSBURGH -- Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger sustained a concussion while being driven into the ground by two Cleveland Browns defenders late in the second quarter of an essentially meaningless game Sunday, but is expected to be ready for the playoffs.
As Roethlisberger delivered a 4-yard pass to tight end Heath Miller over the middle, he was leveled by Willie McGinest at about shoulder level and D'Qwell Jackson at the quarterback's knees. Roethlisberger's head struck the ground hard as McGinest, possibly playing his final NFL game, drove him backward.
Roethlisberger moved his arms and legs and was talking before being placed onto a stretcher and then onto a cart that took him off the field. His helmet was taken apart while he was on the field, a precautionary move so his neck could be stabilized, but hospital tests revealed no additional injuries.
"All tests are negative -- which is a positive," coach Mike Tomlin said. "We are optimistic of where he is going to be [in the playoffs]. The bye is going to be helpful in regards to that."
As he was being driven off the field, Roethlisberger lifted his left arm and raised his thumb to the fans. The gesture drew a loud cheer from a crowd that stayed silent during the nearly 15 minutes Roethlisberger stayed on the turf.
The Steelers players did not huddle in a group or begin saying prayers, as teams often do when they fear a serious injury, because their trainers kept relaying information to them.
"When it starts taking long, you start to get worried and think something's going on, but we got the update from the trainers that he had a concussion," linebacker Larry Foote said.
Running back Willie Parker said, "We were pretty sure he was all right. He was doing all of the things they asked him to do. He didn't have us in doubt or anything."
The Steelers, already locked into the No. 2 spot in the AFC's playoffs, could not improve their playoff position by beating the Browns. But Tomlin wanted Roethlisberger and the other starters to play most or part of the game -- the Steelers went on to win 31-0 -- because they won't play again until Jan. 10 or 11.
"It was a productive effort," Tomlin said.
Before getting hurt, Roethlisberger was 9-of-14 for 110 yards and an interception that came after Pittsburgh had driven to a first down at the Browns 20 late in the first quarter.
Heinz Field has a grass surface, which generally is more forgiving than artificial turf when a player's head strikes the ground.

JAMAICA NEWS - Usain Bolt`s Olympic Dance Creator Shot And Killed
David Alexander Smith, known in entertainment circles as "Ice," was shot in the head and chest during an argument with two men. They then took his keys and fled in his car, police said.
Smith created the "Gully Creeper" that Bolt danced each time he won a race at the Olympics last August.
Bolt set world records in the 100 meters and 200 meters and was a member of the Jamaican quartet that won gold in the 4-by-100 meter relay.
Jamaica has one of the world's highest per-capita murder rate. More than 1,500 people have been murdered in the Caribbean island this year.

Mason to play despite injury
Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Derrick Mason, who is suffering from a shoulder injury, will play on Sunday against Jacksonville, Ravens coach John Harbaugh told ESPN's Sal Paolantonio on Saturday.
"The shoulder is getting better, but he's dealing with some related spasms in his neck. We'll work those out before game time with some deep tissue massage and he'll go," Harbaugh said. In last week's win at Dallas, Mason caught six passes for 66 yards, including a 13-yard touchdown, despite having to leave the game twice after aggravating the injury. He was listed as questionable in the team's injury report. The Ravens will qualify for the AFC playoffs if they win or tie on Sunday.Lil Bodi Featuring Grafh

Five People Shot After E-40 Concert In Denver
Police in Denver, Colorado are investigating a shootout following an E-40 Concert that left five people wounded.
According to police, the shooting occurred around 2:00 am outside of the club as it closed, after E-40 had performed without incident inside the venue.
Local residents in the area have stated that fights frequently break out at the club, which is located at 11th Avenue and Broadway in downtown Denver.
A witness to the shooting said he heard automatic gunfire, followed by a large crowd scattering for cover.
"It was bullets flying everywhere. It was automatic. It was like a machine gun, ba-dop ba-bop ba-bop ba-bop. It was just really crazy," witness Kendall Davis told Denver‘s 9 News. "At first we hear a wave of shots and we didn't realize it was gunfire until we seen a lot of people running by. So then definitely I wanted to secure our building, so we hit all the lights, locked the front door, secured our business because we didn't want any shooters running in."
One victim is in critical condition while four others were treated for minor wounds and later released.
E-40’s latest album Ball Street Journal is in stores now.

Warriors deal Celts back-to-back losses for 1st time this season
Paul Pierce had 21 points and five assists and Kevin Garnett scored 14, but the Celtics couldn't hold a 14-point lead a day after their franchise-record 19-game winning streak ended with a nine-point loss to the Lakers in Los Angeles on Christmas.
Boston (27-4) still must play at Sacramento on Sunday and at Portland on Tuesday to complete this West Coast swing before heading home.
Jackson scored 15 points in the final period and Marco Belinelli totaled 22 for the Warriors, who have won five straight and 12 of 15 against the Celtics at home. Golden State lost 119-111 in Boston on Nov. 26 in the teams' first meeting.
Kelenna Azubuike's 3-pointer with 7:47 to play cut the Celtics' lead to 76-74 before Ray Allen hit a floater on the other end. Jackson then scored eight straight points for Golden State. He followed Allen's bucket with a 3 at 7:03, hit the go-ahead basket with 6:02 to play to make it 79-78, then made another 3 at 5:33.
After Eddie House's 3 pulled Boston to 93-87 with 1:17 left, the Celtics had two misses and Jackson knocked down a pair of free throws with 36.2 seconds to go.
With Garnett and Rajon Rondo on the bench, Belinelli hit consecutive 3-pointers in the final minute of the third quarter for the Warriors, who trailed 72-64 heading into the final period. Ronny Turiaf dunked for Golden State to start the fourth, pulling his team the closest it had been since late in the first quarter and delighting the Warriors' second sellout crowd of the season.
Turiaf finished with 14 points and eight boards.
Rondo had 11 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists to go with seven turnovers. He shot just 3-for-11 against the Lakers for six points after scoring 26 and 18, respectively, in his two prior outings on a combined 19-of-26 shooting.
After Golden State pulled to 42-35 late in the first half, Allen answered with a 3 on the other end for his first points of the game and the Celtics led 51-39 at the break.
Boston was minus starting center Kendrick Perkins, who injured his left shoulder in the first quarter Thursday. Local standout Leon Powe earned the start in Perkins' place and finished with 12 points and seven rebounds.

Crennel says he can still right Browns' ship
The team dropped its fifth straight game Sunday, 14-0 to Cincinnati. The Browns failed to score an offensive touchdown for the fifth straight game to finish 1-7 at home, one season after going 7-1 and winning 10 games.
Owner Randy Lerner plans to review Crennel's job status following the season and Crennel feels he can make a strong case to come back for a fifth season. Crennel is 24-39.
At a news conference Monday, Crennel also declined to confirm a report on WKYC-TV that defensive end Shaun Smith punched quarterback Brady Quinn last week.
Crennel called it "family business and if it happened, we're keeping it in house." Smith was inactive Sunday.
